Van Hire

Whether you’ve got a lot of bulky items to move for a couple of days or are looking for a model to support your business activities, finding the right van to hire is easy with Rent Direct. Not only do we guarantee exceptional value for money and vehicles that are less than two years of age, but we are a local independently run company you can deal with directly – without going through brokers or price comparison websites. We provide you with the peace of mind you need to get behind the wheel of one of our vehicles and take to the road with complete confidence.

The selection of vans in our line-up is among the very best around, including models by such leading brands as Ford, Volkswagen, Vauxhall, and Mercedes. We provide both short and long wheelbase options along with car derived vans and even big and capable Luton Box vans featuring a tail lift. The tail lift is the most sought-after van as this takes the pain and strain away from your back when moving house. Why not add a Sack Barrow to your booking to save effort on the carrying?

Choosing the right van for your needs is important, particularly if you’ve never been behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle before. As such, our team will provide you with the assistance and information you need to make an informed choice. Planning on taking a few household items to the charity shop? One of our small vans will be ideal. Need to pack up everything in your property when moving home? A Luton van is certain to fit the bill. We’ll only ever offer impartial advice to ensure you make the right decision.

Regardless of the size you go for, you can rest assured that all vans come fully comprehensively insured and in the best possible condition. We ply-line all of our vans but leave the anchor points exposed so that you can secure all of your items. The cabs are clean and comfortable and feature more and more car-like accessories that can include (but not all) satellite navigation, air conditioning, and Bluetooth.

What van size is best suited for each task?

Calculating the van size required

When looking at van hire, you will need to consider various dimensions, as well as the overall volume of space in the load carrying area of the van. Think about the size of the items that you need to transport. Measure the length, height and width of the largest items and compare this to the size of the load carrying space in the back of the van. Also take into consideration, how you need to stack your items and if you need to just make one trip or multiple trips.

Car Derived - Van Hire Group V1

This is our smallest hire van, the size of a car and easy to drive. These vans can seat two people and have a load carrying capacity of 1.5 cubic metres.

Example Models: Ford Transit Connect and Vauxhall Combo. You must be between 25 and 69 years of age to hire these vans.

Short Wheel Base - Van Hire Group V2

This is a medium size van with a short wheel base. Short wheel base vans can seat three people and have a load carrying capacity of 5.5 cubic metres.

Example Models: Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter. You must be between 25 and 69 years of age to hire these vans

Long Wheel Base (3m) - Van Hire Group V3

This is a medium size van. These vans can seat three people and have a load carrying capacity of 9.5 cubic metres.

Example Models: Ford Transit LWB, VW Crafter MWB. You must be between 25 and 69 years of age to hire these vans.

Luton Box Van with Tail Lift - Van Hire Group V5

This is the large van with a high and wide carrying area, suitable for house moves. Luton Box Vans seat 3 people and have a carrying capacity of 16.5 cubic metres. The tail lift aids the loading of items up to 500kgs.

Example Models: VW Crafter Luton Box with tail lift, Ford Transit Luton Box with tail lift. You must be between 25 and 69 years of age to hire these vans.

Another consideration is "payload", which is the weight that the van is designed to carry. The weight of your load needs to be less than or equal to the payload for the vehicle, for your load to be carried legally. If you have more than one other person that needs to travel with you in the van, also check how many seats the van has and how many people it is designed to carry. Take a look at the range of vans above that we have on the Rent Direct fleet. With each van we have given the dimensions and an overview of typical tasks that are suitable for that vehicle.
