The United Kingdom is becoming one of the most popular places to visit on a holiday, with people coming from all over the world to experience the sights, sounds and feel of a British holiday. For those of us who live here all year round, “staycations” have become a fitting replacement for the expensive family holiday, with residents choosing to visit places in the UK to save money, taking advantage of some great car hire packages along the way.
By leaving their cars at home, people are able to rent much larger vehicles to help make travelling easier. A typical family car might be comfortable and suitable enough to take a family of four to the nearest town on a shopping trip, but it can be chaotic when it comes to taking everyone on a 200-mile drive along with a car full of luggage for the week.
For that reason, car hire packages have become a part of the “staycation” experience, but where are people actually going? With the UK divided up into ten categories, we’ve compiled a list of places that you could go and see this year, or anytime you like for that matter!
Scotland is always a popular tourist destination, particularly with the English, and it’s easy to see why. With the highlands, lochs and glens there are plenty of pull factors, and the tranquility makes them the perfect place for a quiet getaway from city life. With destinations such as Loch Ness and the castle at Edinburgh, there is history and relaxation in abundance.
Northern Ireland is another popular place to visit. With the cities of Belfast, Londonderry and County Tyrone, to name just a few, all offering different experiences for tourists, you’re sure to find something worth seeing. So whether it’s a trip around historical castles and monasteries you’re after, or a quiet break taking in the sights on a walking break, there is something for everyone.
The North West of England is full of cities ideal for short breaks. Manchester and Liverpool are both full of history and museums, with restaurants and bars galore, while Blackpool and Southport are popular seaside destinations.
The North East of England features plenty of parks and seaside towns, making it the perfect getaway from those living and working in the south who don’t get the chance to visit the north very often.
The East of England is bursting with seaside towns. Hunstanton, Skegness, Cromer, they’re all great for family breaks, while Norwich and Ipswich are great city breaks with plenty to see and do if you fancy shopping somewhere different.
The Midlands is the ideal area for city breaks. Take in the legend of Robin Hood in Nottingham, the National Space Centre in Leicester, the cathedrals in Peterborough, Lincoln and Ely, and the shopping in Birmingham. Or, if you like nothing more than hills, valleys and reservoirs, you have Rutland Water, near Stamford, or the Peak District in Derbyshire.
The hills and valleys of Wales are also gorgeous places to experience. With rolling countryside and stunning architecture, as well as historical castles and the cities of Cardiff and Swansea in the south, and Anglesey to the North, you’re sure to have a great holiday.
The South West provides some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll find. Cornwall is full of postcard-towns perfect for quiet getaways by the sea, while the coastline provides the dream location for people looking for a surfing break.
Southampton, Brighton and Portsmouth are perfect locations for a break in the South East, and provides the ideal starting point to split the holiday in two by hopping over to France on the ferry.
Or, if you’re looking for THE city break in the UK, there is, of course, London. With all the historical monuments, the shopping, the famous buildings and tourist attractions such as the Millennium Eye, Buckingham Palace, Madam Tussauds and Trafalgar Square, you’ll have to go some to find a better city break anywhere else in the UK.
